Crawfordsville Soul Stroll

The Crawfordsville Soul Stroll is a walking tour of selected Black historical sites located in the city. Attendees can independently follow the tour on foot or by car at their own pace; the format is similar to the Crawfordsville Garden Walk sponsored by the Crawfordsville Flower Lovers. The tour is curated by local historians Shannon Hudson (Crawfordsville Middle School) and Vicke Hudson Swisher (Bethel AME Church), authors of To Remember the Forgotten School: Lincoln School for Colored Children and Abolitionists on the Underground Railroad: Legends from Montgomery County, Indiana.
The kickoff event will begin at 9:45 AM at Bethel AME Church (213 West North Street). From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Andy Robinson Gym will be open with maps and booklets to use on the tour; attendees may also find the map and site information on the event website. In addition, the gym will house the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County’s fall 2023/spring 2024 exhibit on Crawfordsville’s Lincoln School for Colored Children and booths with information on financial and physical health and mental wellness. A picnic with a selection of soul food will be available outside the gym (pending weather) from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. All portions of the Soul Stroll are free and open to the public.
