Discover the Fascinating Medical Solutions to Save an Inmate’s Life in Pre-1933 Rotary Jail Incidents! Join Mr. Fred Schaefer as he dissects the intriguing medical and surgical interventions that could have been employed, and historically were available, to rescue the lives of inmates following wounds sustained at the Rotary Jail. The 30-ton rotating mechanism was known to cause serious and life-threatening injuries to inmates who found themselves in lock-up, and with few (if any) safeguards in place to protect them from the rotating turnstile. This is an engaging presentation providing information, and a general re-enactment of a surgical procedure.
Fred Schaefer is a graduate of IvyTech Community College, who holds certifications from IUPUI. He has 51 years of experience in the operating room, currently with OrthoIndy as the First Assistant Manager. Being a historical researcher, and holding vast experience in the medical field, has made him an expert in educating the public about the perils faced by patients and medical staff during less medically modern times, with his focus being primarily on medical procedures conducted during the American Civil War. He has been sharing his knowledge and presentations with the public for 35 years!
This is a free event to the public. Spots are limited for each time slot, and registration is required – please arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to your reserved time and wait to enter. The presentation will take place inside the Tannenbaum Cultural Center (107 W Spring Street, Crawfordsville, IN) located directly behind the museum. Donations will be accepted onsite for the Rotary Jail Museum. Additionally, the RJM will be open to self-guide for a discounted admission rate of $5, with staff present to answer questions.
