Backstep Brewing came to life when two craft beer enthusiast firefighters happened to get assigned to the same fire house. A couple of after work beers eventually turned into an idea and then a concept. Jim originally came from the bar business and Patrick had flipped a ton of houses, so the equation to build a brewery was there and off to a good start. The research began with more beer, more beer festivals, and more planning. An extensive search to find the right location ended at a prohibition era building in Downtown Crawfordsville. The four story brick beauty and former Monon Hotel has housed a bar in the ground floor for generations and seemed like a natural fit. After an extensive rehab, The Backstep Brewing Company opened as a tap room in January of 2017 to an incredibly warm welcome from the community. Another relentless search landed Josh Miller to brew on the newly acquired brewery license. Since then, the trio has strived to bring the public the best beer, service, and experience they possibly can.
